Trump has no policy soul, and should be opposed by a strong, normal Republican. Think Mitt Romney but with persuasive powers and passion. Putting in place tariffs such as Trump has proposed is idiotic and so idiotic that I felt no need to end the previous sentence.
We really only had two strong, normal Republicans in the twentieth century. Both are associated with peace and prosperity, and both laid the groundwork for a stronger America. They were Calvin Coolidge and Ronald Reagan. Dwight Eisenhower and George H. W. Bush were acceptably good. Harding was decent, in the short time he had. Taft was alright I think, but Taft I'm still evaluating. Teddy Roosevelt projected a great strength and vitality, but put in place expansions of government, the trajectory of which has begun to undermine the Republic. Ford was blah. George W., don't get me started. And that's the twenty-first century anyway.
Nixon deserves his own category.
Fiscally, we are at third down and nineteen yards to go. Do we really want to be at fourth and twenty-three?
Ben,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you.
Trump is an embarrassment and it seems modern Republicans are the "Do as I say, not as I do" party.
I respect you a bit for saying that Trump doesn't support your core beliefs. I respect you more to say that he should be opposed by a normal Republican.
Here's the thing though, I don't see any mainstream Republican actually trying to take the party back that isn't going to retire in 2-4 years. That's a big problem. I really don't know what their motivation for not doing so. Usually the reason is money and power, as if they stand up to him, they won't get their amazing powerful and well paying job anymore. Is it that obvious? I really don't know. But I see their actions and yes they're absolutely selfish and toxic.
History will judge us on what's happening now, and scratching their heads on why we didn't stop him. When it was so obvious there was Russian collusion, and so obvious people were advocating for tax cuts for Republican donors with large campaign contributions. Maybe the end game is to push the country further and further to the right, or just break the whole system and start fresh. If that's the case, it's childish as cheaters make the rules and that's undemocratic undermining the fabric of our society. I judge a person from their actions and not their words so when a Christian tells me that he supports Trump but Clinton can't have a mistress I will judge him because of his hypocrisy and no longer want his ideas on morality as he doesn't have a grasp on it himself. Do as I say, not as I do. I'm not going to listen to what you say anymore.
An honest but I hope simple question is why do so many Christians and Republicans support Trump? He doesn't embody their values! Be careful with a 'no real Scotsman' defense. I'm no longer going to listen to them on what they said about Clinton or anyone else that does it. We have a false equivalency there, and if they can't see it, they don't deserve to be heard. Cut their mic! Looks like our kids will fix our problems, and I encourage it and have no problem paying higher taxes for a good education, and good health care because that's how functioning societies work. See: Western Europe. If you want to push yourself into a dysfunctional society that helps the wealthy, see Russia, China and Saudi Arabia.
Face it, a Cold Warrior War Hawk would be appalled on what's happening now. Do you think a Eisenhower or Reagan congress would let what's happening continue? Absolutely not.
No more doubling down, Rs, learn from your mistake and let's make a better society together, it's for my generation and my kids' generation not some Baby Boomer that gets really angry for irrational reasons. Don't be the drunk uncle at a Christmas party, no one will listen to you except to roll their eyes and never ever want to end up like you.
