It's tough for me to verbalize why I don't like the Department of Education. In my mind, thoughts against Federal bureaucracy, my support for the Tenth Amendment, and in general, a strong desire for local government to be more important, all collide. I feel like the Department of Education is the most unconstitutional part of the Executive Branch, as the Constitution is silent on the subject of education, and this means that it is clearly left up to the states and the people.
Welcome back!
ReplyDeleteI'm really curious to see what you think are the flaws of the American educational system? I'm not trying to be argumentative or finding ways to put down what you're saying, but as someone that's seen the inside of the system like I have, I'm curious since we're both politically different if we can agree on some things.
Cameron, welcome back and thanks for posting.
ReplyDeleteActually, as we've both seen, the American education system overall is still stronger than often reputed and we play a pair of aces better than many countries play a straight flush.
What I'm criticizing *isn't* the American educational system as a system, although it is not quite beyond reproach, that's not my baileywick here. What I'm criticizing specifically is the gross unconstitutional Federal overreach and thousands of bureaucrats in DC who aren't the point of the spear and who never have to get in front of kids the way you do.
I quite agree with that. It seems that we have too many career politicians and put into places that they really don't fit into. What works as an idea in Washington DC really doesn't translate well to Michigan or Maine for that matter. How can what a DC bureaucrat help with a very rural state like Kansas or a heavily urban San Fransisco. Both regions have a very different student body with a very different need in their area.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'm getting ahead of myself here, but a byproduct of a very partisan environment we have now R vs D might actually reduce the Executive branch and start strengthening state or local governments. Sure Trump is threatening his way or he takes away block grants but perhaps a strong local government can call his bluff and basically let themselves run more independently than what DC wants. (this easily could be reversed if a Democrat gets into power with a very Red State or Local government.) Time will tell
