The poetry was not very good in the years of his happiness

“In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love — they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.”

And there you have it.

  1. Frankly speaking, I'd rather my family and I live in a prosperous and stable Switzerland than a war-mongering but making great art Italy. Even today after being to both countries. Switzerland has one heckuva living standard and beats Italy's corrupt government and poverty for some.

  2. I get what you're saying. I was again inside my own head here and saying that I feel like there's a weird disconnect between being happy and being able to write well, and that I feel like I do some of my best work when I'm frustrated.

Don't move to Italy just to write poetry! From what I can tell, it also seems to me that Switzerland is better.
